STANDING FOR ELECTION TO NUS CONFERENCE

What is the NUS and NUS Conference?

NUS stands for National Union of Students. Most universities (but not all) are affiliated to the NUS which campaigns on behalf of students nationwide.

NUS Conference is held once every year. It is the main policy-making body of the National Union of Students (NUS). At Conference, NUS delegates direct the strategy of NUS’ campaigns and vote for the new sabbaticals in the NUS Elections

Why is the NUS important to Student LifeNet?

  • Despite supposedly representing all students’ interests, the NUS is actively pro-abortion and supports abortion up to birth – particularly the NUS Women’s Campaign.
  • It even funds (with your money) extreme abortion rights groups.
  • It represents Student LifeNet’s only organised opposition in Universities.
  • It feeds pro-abortion propaganda and resources to student unions – particularly welfare and womens officers.

What can I do?

  • We are currently trying to get as many people as possible to stand for election to NUS Conference (see NUS Delegates below).
  • Eventually we hope to secure a large voting block at the Conference to influence the outcome of elections and ensure pro-life candidates are elected.

Becoming a NUS Delegate

  • Every affiliated University sends representatives to NUS Conference. Normally a University is entitled to one candidate for every 1,000 students it has.
  • You do not need any previous experience.

Getting elected as a NUS Delegate

  • Delegate elections happen at different times depending on the University.
  • Normally turnout is extremely low. Those elected are invariably those with the most contacts.
  • You can build up a contact base easily through your friends, word-of-mouth, pro-life societies and other favourable groups (e.g. religious groups).

Standing as a Student LifeNet candidate

  • Providing you have the approval of us (email info@studentlifenet.co.uk), you may stand as a Student LifeNet candidate and use our reputation/logos/literature/contacts to your advantage.
  • If you stand as a Student LifeNet candidate you must make a point of standing on a pro-life platform and make the NUS’ position on abortion an important part of your campaign.
  • If elected to NUS Conference, you must be prepared to vote along pro-life lines on policies on abortion etc. This also applies to any candidates standing for the NUS Executive. On every other issue you may vote however you wish.
  • If you stand as an Independent, Conservative, Labour etc candidate then you can still vote along pro-life lines obviously.
  • In certain circumstances we are willing to endorse candidates standing under other banners (e.g. Independent) providing you have a proven pro-life record and where you feel you have a greater chance of being elected under this banner.

Is much work involved?

  • None at all. NUS Conference is no more than 4 days long during the Easter Holidays in (usually) Blackpool.
  • Even the elections to Conference are over a short-period of time and normally involve minimal campaigning.
  • All you have to do is turn up and vote!
  • Representing your University as a NUS Delegate is something positive to put on a CV.

The above information also applies to NUS Campaign Conferences such as the Women’s Conference.
