PRO-LIFE MP VISITS OXFORD UNIVERSITY - News
PRO-LIFE MP VISITS OXFORD UNIVERSITY
On Thursday 18th December, David Amess, the MP for Southend West and a Member of the House of Commons Health Select Committee, addressed the Oxford University ProLife Society.

We were treated to a short speech outlining the ins and outs of being pro-life in Parliament. He emphasised that as he had gone to parliament to help people have better lives it was natural for him to wish to help protect the right to have any life at all.

Particularly interesting was his description of his role on the Health Select Committee, a job he clearly relishes because it allows him to subject the Government to the level of scrutiny it avoids in the House of Commons.

Mr Amess accepted some questions to be put to the government concerning the cost to the NHS of abortion, emergency contraception and the fitting of IUDs and concerning the legality or otherwise of Marie Stopes International's campaign which advertises the morning-after pill.

We asked him if the current trend for harmonisation in Europe might mean that Britain's notoriously lax laws on abortion and foetal experimentation might be tightened up. He reckoned that this was an avenue worth exploring.

It was not only informative but also a real pleasure to meet David Amess.
