Fiona Pinto, ex-director of Student LifeNet, and Joseph Biddulph - candidates of the ProLife Party (
www.prolife.org.uk) - will face trial on Wednesday at a Magistrates court in Abergavenny, Wales.
Fiona and Joe were arrested during their election campaign for the Welsh Assembly, for showing a picture of an aborted baby of 21 weeks deemed by the police to be ‘abusive, threatening or intimidating’.
Patrick Leahy, director of Student LifeNet commented: ‘We will be giving our support to Fiona and Joe in order to reiterate the pro-life movement’s democratic right to freedom of speech.
‘Like Fiona and Joe, an unacceptably large number of pro-life students have been silenced in universities and schools for daring to challenge the status quo on abortion. Our presence outside the court will therefore act as a reminder to the authorities that they will never silence us.
‘This case also has implications for Student LifeNet’s future campaigning. If Fiona and Joe win their case then there will be few legal barriers left to stop pro-life societies from showing abortion images in universities.
‘Student LifeNet remains committed to the showing of such pictures as it is otherwise impossible to describe the humanity of the child and the destruction involved in the abortion process.
‘If anyone is offended by the real nature of abortion then they ought to join with us in opposing it.’
