POLL SHOWS MAJORITY BACK HOWARD ON ABORTION - MORE WOMEN THAN MEN SUPPORT STRICTER LAWS - Press Releases

POLL SHOWS MAJORITY BACK HOWARD ON ABORTION - MORE WOMEN THAN MEN SUPPORT STRICTER LAWS
Student LifeNet welcomes today's Daily Telegraph poll which shows that 43% of voters believe the abortion time limit should be changed as opposed to 29% who are opposed to any change in the law. 51% of women support a change in the law with 39% believing the time limit should be reduced to less than 20 weeks.

Patrick Leahy, Director of Student LifeNet commented:

'If we needed any more proof then this is it: the vast majority of voters believe it is time to review Britain's absurd abortion law. We are appearing increasingly out-of-step with the rest of the world given Europe's stricter laws and America's pro-life majority. Yet Tony Blair, who is looking increasingly unprincipled and inhumane in the face of new medical evidence, still refuses to change his opinion.

'Pro-abortion groups will be shocked by this poll. Only 3% of the entire population believe, like they do, the abortion law should be further liberalised. Furthermore, it seems that their belief in primarily men opposing abortion is wrong. In fact 51% of women compared to 33% of men want to lower the abortion time limit.

'However, Michael Howard will be encouraged by the poll results. His position, supporting a 20 week time-limit, gives the Conservatives at least a 4% advantage over Labour. This is a massive advantage for a position on a single issue and could potentially cost Labour the election.

'With abortion set to remain in the news for some time, this will definitely become an issue at the polls.'
