STUDENT LIFENET APPALLED BY "DONOR BABY" RULING
Reacting to news that the Law Lords have ruled that the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) did not overstep its remit by allowing the creation of a donor baby, Patrick Leahy, Director of Student LifeNet stated:
'We are appalled by the Law Lords' ruling. It effectively gives the green light to the unelected HFEA to do anything they want without consulting either parliament or the public.
'However, undoubtedly as a result of this case, considerable criticism has been launched at the HFEA from all corners. The likely reform of the HFEA, in our favour, will be a result of the work of Comment on Reproductive Ethics and its Director, Josephine Quintavalle.
'We applaud their courageous work. No other organisation has opposed the creation of babies purely designed for the benefit of others to this extent. We should not lose sight of the dangers posed by some new reproductive technologies and the potential they have to destroy the welfare of children, and as was the case here, destroy human lives too.
'We hope that the incoming government will listen to the concerns raised in the case and give serious consideration to the idea of a national bioethics committee. Whilst such an organisation may not always produce favourable results, it would, at least, be more accountable and its decision-making process more open, than the current idiotic arrangement.'
